2002 Mark Smith, Jr.

Mark Smith, Jr. - Class of 2002

Mark graduated from Upper Perkiomen High School in 2002 where he participated in football and wrestling. He was a 3 year letterman in football and a 4 year letterman in wrestling. As a member of the Indian wrestling team, Mark finished his career with virtually every statistical record for both Upper Perk and District One. At the time that his high school career ended. in 2002, Mark held the state record for pins in a career (124), the District One record for wins (161) and was a three time PIAA state medalist, finishing 4th during his Sophomore and Senior year and placing 5th as a freshman. Other statistical achievements include his four Section II championships, his two District One championships and three Southeast Regional championships. His career record was an incredible 161-19.

Beyond all of the statistics and accomplishments, Mark was and still is the face of Upper Perk wrestling. His fierce headlock became legendary around the state and country. His fiery approach towards every match inspired the crowds who would come out to watch him and begin the chants, “USA! USA! USA!” Mark’s overall good nature made him an ambassador of the sport and of Upper Perk wrestling.

In addition to his outstanding wrestling career, Mark was also a very good football player who was the starting nose guard as both a junior and senior. Team captain his senior year, Mark displayed the courage and leadership that was greatly admired by his coaches and teammates. Mark earned Ist  Team All PAC-10 honors his senior year.

 Mark truly is Upper Perk wrestling and he is one of the chief reasons for the ascent of the program to state and national prominence. Mark’s dedication, character and loyalty to Upper Perk make him a deserved member of the Upper Perk Wall of Fame.
